Mercer County Regional Council of Governments has invested more than $1 million in Chestnut Run Swim Beach in South Pymatuning Township since it opened in 1977.

Thursday, Mercer County commissioners approved a 25-year plan developed by COG for future recreation, management and development goals for the 80-plus acre park off state Route 846 along Shenango River Lake.

The original lease between commissioners and the Army Corps of Engineers which operates the lake expired last March 31. Before the lease is renewed, the corps requires that COG submit a development plan.

Melissa Koch, COG's regional recreation specialist, said she has been working on the development plan for about a year. It projects the park's maintenance needs, new campsites and other recreational developments, such as trails on undeveloped land, she said.

Past improvements at the beach have included bath-house renovations; well, sewage system and roof repairs; and the addition of a snack bar. The access road and parking lots were resurfaced and a picnic pavilion constructed. More than 40 barbecue grills and 60 picnic tables were replaced.

James DeCapua, COG executive director, said COG has also applied for $750,000 to assist with development.
