to perform in play
With hope of encouraging and accommodating participation from individuals with mental retardation, MCAR will present "Our Version of Cirque de Soleil."
The event is slated for 6 p.m. Saturday in Walnut Street Lodge, 40 S. Walnut St., Sharpsville.
Funded by an Arts Council for Erie grant, the project is the first opportunity many with mental retardation have had to participate in a drama or dance class.
"The MCAR Improv" workshop focuses on improvisation and encourages individuals to express their feelings.
Abbey Alter of the lodge directs the workshop with assistance from MCAR's staff.
The group has met for two hours twice weekly for 10 weeks to develop a performance for parents, families and the community.
It will show the public the abilities and talents of those with mental retardation.
The performance is one of the events MCAR is hosting during March in recognition of Mental Retardation Awareness month.
MCAR and The Arc of Mercer County join chapters of The Arc of the United States in bringing attention to issues concerning those with mental retardation.
Tickets can be purchased for $3 at the door.
