Witnesses' accounts of shooting conflict

By Joe Pinchot

Youngstown police are sorting through conflicting stories from witnesses as they investigate the shooting death of a Farrell man.

Brian J. Brodie, 30, of 1023 Fruit Ave., was shot in the head at about 10:45 p.m. Sunday outside the Buckeye Elks Club, police said.

Anita Taylor of Farrell told police she was walking outside the club with Brodie and Ruthann Matthews of Youngstown, when Brodie stopped to talk with two men who were parked in a maroon car in front of the club.

Ms. Matthews and Ms. Taylor walked to Ms. Matthews' car across the street. Brodie came to the car and was sitting in the front seat when he was shot in the head, Ms. Matthews told police.

Ms. Taylor and Ms. Matthews, who drove Brodie to St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, where he died, said they had no problem with anyone in the club, police said.

Another man shot at the same time gave police a much different story.

Sylvester Cox III, 39, of Youngstown told police he was sitting in his girlfriend's burgundy Nissan outside the club, when Brodie and four or five other men came to the car, shot him several times and robbed him of a watch and $210, police said.

Cox, who was listed in stable condition Tuesday at St. Elizabeth's, at first denied knowing any of the suspects, then later told police, "I think they're from Farrell" and implicated Brodie, police said.

Cox, who was shot in the stomach and leg, told police Brodie is Cox's ex-girlfriend's brother-in-law, police said.

Cox claimed Brodie was the first to shoot him, police said.

Hospital personnel found cocaine in Cox's jacket, police said.
