The Trumbull County Coroner's Office has identified the cause of death of a 4-month-old boy who stopped breathing last month while in the charge of a Brookfield day care.

Jackson Davis of Austintown, Ohio, died of sudden infant death syndrome, a spokeswoman said. Jackson stopped breathing Feb. 6 at Peas in the Pod Daycare, 6900 Cherry St. S.E., and died the next day at Tod Children's Hospital, Youngstown.

Brookfield police and fire crews were sent to the center at 12:17 p.m. Feb. 6, and police took over cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived.

Jackson was taken to the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System before being transferred to Tod's. The baby had been on a ventilator.

An autopsy completed March 21 showed the cause of death to be SIDS.

Brookfield police have closed the investigation, after having not received reports of negligence or erroneous circumstances.

According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, SIDS is the sudden death of an infant under one year of age which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including performance of a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the child's clinical history.

SIDS is unexpected and occurs in all types of families, usually with otherwise apparently healthy infants from 1 month to 1 year old.

More deaths are reported in the fall and winter.
