Gloria Pacifico was returning from a shopping trip when she pulled to the side of Mercer-West Middlesex Road to let two ambulances pass.

She saw the ambulances again as she approached home.

"The closer I got, I saw the truck and the ambulances and 'Oh my God,' " she said.

The truck was her husband's pickup and he was being taken to the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System.

"He was shook up and, with his heart condition, they wanted to check on him," said Mrs. Pacifico of her husband, Joseph L. Pacifico Jr., 45, of 2777 Mercer-West Middlesex Road, Shenango Township.

Pacifico, who complained of a sore knee from hitting the dashboard, was turning left into his driveway when a motorcycle driven by Timothy W. O'Brien, 43, of 55 Chestnut St., Wheatland, slammed into his driver's side door, police said.

"It was just metal on metal," said Jim Craven of Youngstown, who drove up on the accident scene shortly after it happened. "They (Pacifico) just had more metal"

O'Brien, who was westbound, was passing four vehicles that had slowed behind the pickup, police said.

Upon impact, O'Brien flew over the handlebars about 60 feet and landed in a yard, police said.

Both men were treated at the hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Pacifico's pickup slid into a ditch.
