Student faces more charges

Police filed more charges Friday against a West Middlesex High School student accused of giving fellow students sleeping pills.

William Shirley III, 18, of 1309 Bend Road, Lackawannock Township, agreed to have all the charges sent to court.

His attorney, Assistant Public Defender Dana Flick, signed a stipulation that, if the prosecution presented evidence, it could show that a crime occurred and Shirley might have been involved.

Shirley, a senior who has been suspended from school, was arrested March 6 by Southwest Mercer County Regional police on charges of two counts each of possession and delivery of Temazepam and corruption of minors.

Assistant District Attorney David Ristvey added charges of possession and delivery of the prescription drug and corruption of minors.

Shirley gave at least four pills March 6 to two 16-year-old boys and a 17-year-old boy at school, police said.

The 17-year-old and one of the 16-year-olds each consumed four pills; the other 16-year-old did not take any pills, said patrolman David McMinn.

The 17-year-old became ill at Mercer County Career Center in Coolspring Township and was taken to United Community Hospital in Pine Township, McMinn said.

The boy complained to career center officials of being very tired.

McMinn said he believes the 17-year-old was released later in the day.

McMinn said he instructed the parents of the 16-year-old who ingested the pills to take him to a hospital.

District Justice Henry J. Russo, Hermitage, released Shirley on his own recognizance.

Temazepam is from the same family of drugs as Valium. Sold under the brand name Restoril, it is used for short-term treatment of insomnia.
