Proposed Pa. tax changes weighed

Jamestown Area School District residents would see the greatest reduction in local school property taxes in Mercer County under Gov. Ed Rendell's budget proposal, according to an analysis by state Senate Democrats.

Residents in the municipalities that make up the Jamestown district would see their tax bills trimmed by a whopping 60 percent, according to information on the Web site pasenate.com.

Rendell's budget proposes an across-the-board reduction in school taxes offset by a 34 percent increase in the state's personal income tax. All school districts would see a reduction of at least 30 percent under the governor's plan.

Farrell, Grove City, Hermitage, Lakeview, Reynolds, Sharpsville and West Middlesex districts would see that 30 percent reduction, according to the site.

Commodore Perry School District taxpayers would see a 51 percent reduction; Greenville Area, 41 percent; Mercer Area, 43 percent; and Sharon, 44 percent.

The Democratic Senate estimates are based on how much money is earmarked for each district's property tax reductions, which only apply to primary residences or "homesteads," and how many homesteads exist within a district.
