RHS senior earns Girl Scout Gold Award

Heidi Geiwitz, daughter of George and Carol Geiwitz of Greenville, was presented the Girl Scout Gold Award during a ceremony at Lebanon Presbyterian Church, Lackawannock Township. The accolade is the highest in Girl Scouts.

For her Gold Award project, she built a life-size Nativity for the front lawn of the church.

Heidi is a member of Cadette/Senior Troop 53 of Greenville, which meets at St. John's Lutheran Church in Delaware Township.

The troop presented a flag ceremony at which she was soloist. Troop members and current and past leaders participated in the ceremony. Heidi's brother, Eagle Scout G. Andrew Geiwitz, took part by escorting his sister and parents.

Molly Stonebraker, Kaitlyn Beck and Kayleigh Nashtock represented the Daisy, Brownie and Junior Scouts in the program for Lebanon Presbyterian.

Nancy Senger of Penn Lakes Girl Scout Council presented the award to Heidi. The Rev. Donald P. Wilson, pastor of Lebanon Presbyterian, concluded the program with the benediction.

State Rep. Rod E. Wilt of Sugar Grove Township, R-17th District, and Mercer County Commissioner Olivia M. Lazor presented a citation to Heidi. State Sen. Robert D. Robbins of Salem Township, R-50th District, gave Heidi a citation during the morning worship service in Lebanon Presbyterian.

Heidi, a Girl Scout for 12 years, joined Brownie Troop 36 in 1991. She was a member of the troop for three years and earned 37 Try-its as a Brownie.

She earned her Brownie wings in 1994 and moved on to Junior Troop 31. Heidi earned 31 badges, all four signs, Leadership pin and Junior Aide Patch as a junior. She also earned the God and Family through Girl Scouts at Lebanon Presbyterian with help from Rev. Wilson.

Heidi earned the Bridge to Cadettes in 1997 and joined Cadette Troop 53. She earned five Interest Project Patches; Cadette Girl Scout's Challenge and Leadership pins and Community Service Bar; and From Dreams to Reality.

In April 1999, Heidi earned her Silver Award, the highest award in Cadette Girl Scouting. She was awarded the Bridge to Senior Girl Scouts in October 1999.

As a Senior Scout of Troop 53, she has earned 17 Interest Project Patches; Career Exploration; Senior Girl Scout Leadership and Challenge; and 10 Year Award pins; Senior Girl Scout Community Service Bar; and Program Aide patch and pin.

Heidi has participated in service projects, including Halloween parties at St. Paul Homes, West Salem Township; and PennDOT cleanup days. She has made totes and pillows for the American Cancer Society and has planted trees at Riverside Park in Greenville.

Heidi has camped at four of the five camps in Penn Lakes Council.

The Reynolds High School senior attends the High School Scholar Program at Shenango Campus of Pennsylvania State University, Sharon.

She was inducted in May into the National Honor Society.

At Reynolds, she is a member of the concert, jazz and marching bands. She has performed with the marching band at two Pittsburgh Pirates games; the Apple Blossom Festival competition parade in Winchester, Va., and the Festival of Music at Williamsburg, Va.

Heidi also is a member of the Reynolds choir and vocal ensemble. She was chosen to participate in 2002 and 2003 Mercer County Choir and 2003 District Choir. She belongs to Students for Charity.

Heidi has been a counselor for Mercer County Youth Conservation camp for four years and will be this year's camp administrator. She is an instructor on the trap range at Mercer County Youth Field Day.

Heidi is secretary of Harthegig Conservation Club and helps twice a year with hunter-safety courses.

She also is a member of Lebanon Presbyterian's youth group.

Heidi plans to start college in the fall at Penn State-Shenango and then work on a bachelor in nursing at Jameson School of Nursing in New Castle.
