Church to put on 'A Really Big Shew'

Fans of Ed Sullivan can relive the good old days when the Presbyterian Church of West Middlesex presents its annual dinner theater "A Really Big Shew."

Every Sunday night for more than two decades, Sullivan, with his peculiar diction and awkward gestures, brought an incredible variety of entertainment into American homes.

Viewers watched a variety of entertainment from opera to rock, slapstick comedy, ventriloquists and many other forms of entertainment on one telecast.

"A Really Big Shew" is a tribute to Sullivan and a chance for local performers to unleash their own talents.

Acts will include numbers originally performed by the Supremes, Stevie Wonder, Herb Alpert, Patti Page, Leslie Gore, Lena Horne, Johnny Mathis and many others.

The performance will also include novelty acts seen on Sullivan like ventriloquist Senor Wences, plate spinners Chong and Mana, comedian Allan Sherman and acrobats The Flying Menedez.

The dinner theater cast includes nearly 50 members ranging in age from 7 to 70.

"They are an incredibly talented group of people," director Jonathan Fister said.

"Considering that the church has a membership of approximately 400 persons, it is significant that so many participate in the actual performance."

Fister said many other people also help to make the performance successful by preparing and serving the food, washing dishes, making costumes, constructing the sets and working as the stage crew.

"Nearly the entire congregation plays a role in this annual project. Whole families work to make the event a success," Fister said of the productions, which have been staged for nearly 10 years.

The show runs Friday and Saturday and April 10 through 12. Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for children.

The price includes a dinner choice of braised steak or stuffed chicken breast. Show-only tickets are $7 for adults and $3.50 for children.

Limited seating is still available.

Call the church office at (724) 528-9706 for ticket information.
