Thiel College was supposed to be the site of an anti-war protest Thursday afternoon. Fliers distributed throughout town and on campus told people an event would be held in front of the Howard Miller Student Center to protest the war in Iraq. "Support our troops, but protest this stupid war, which is solely for American Oil Interests," the flier said. "It is up to individuals who care to show up and protest. Bring your own signs." No one came. Greenville-West Salem Township Police Department was aware of the planned protest. Police Chief Tom Strahler said Don Aubrecht, chief of the Thiel public safety department, said they would call the local police if the protest got out of hand. Betsy Hildebrand, public relations director at Thiel, said if the protest was organized by an off-campus group, a permit would have been needed for the protest. "We don't even know who was organizing this," she said. The flier did not identify a group or organization that was putting together the protest. Fliers were posted around campus advertising the event, but after a while, the fliers came down, Ms. Hildebrand said. "We don't know if they decided not to do it or what," she said. Several students who were outside taking advantage of the pleasant weather said they weren't aware of the protest. |
