Community sending
cheer to armed forces

By Robin Zambrini

The Hubbard community is sending a message loud and clear -- "We support our troops."

As war rages on in Iraq, the community is conducting a campaign to send some cheer to troops overseas.

"Operation Support" kicked off on March 24 at Walt's Barber Shop in Hubbard Township with members of Girl Scout Troop Service Unit 45, Boy Scout Troop 100, local dignitaries, Veterans of Foreign Wars representatives and the public in attendance.

The two service organizations are combining to distribute letters of support throughout the community. Residents are encouraged to sign their name to a letter as part of Operation Support.

The letters, which will also be available to sign at local businesses, will be delivered to U.S. military bases to be sent to troops overseas.

Operation Support was created by Walter Wolanin, assistant Boy Scout leader of Troop 100, who said inspiration for the project came when he began putting up patriotic signs at his barber shop.

"The day the war started, I hung up flags and signs, and had patriotic music playing," Wolanin said, adding that people began stopping by to share their sentiments as well.

Realizing the amount of interest there is in the community to do something positive for the troops, Operation Support was born.
