Man accused of cop attack
has charges proceed to court

A man who allegedly attacked two Sharon patrolmen while armed with a double-edged sword and two pocket knives will remain in Mercer County Jail for the time being.

Patrick Stumpf, 20, of 490 S. Dock St., Apartment 3, Sharon, had a preliminary hearing Thursday before District Justice James E. McMahon, Sharon. Two counts of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and carrying a prohibited offensive weapon were all waived to Mercer County Common Pleas Court.

Randall Hetrick, Stumpf's court-appointed attorney, said there was a plea agreement arranged at the county court level.

Hetrick asked McMahon to reduce Stumpf's bond from $10,000 to being released on his own recognizance. Stumpf has been in jail since his March 14 arrest.

Stumpf told McMahon he has health problems and needs medical treatment. "The beating I took from the cops that day ... my health's been going straight down," he said.

McMahon denied the bond reduction and assured Stumpf that he would get any needed medical attention.

Police said they were called to the 400 block of Dock Street the evening of March 14 and found Stumpf with a 30-inch, double-edge sword strapped to his waist.

Stumpf tried to punch and kick patrolmen Steven Rossi and Jeffrey Wiscott, according to the affidavit of probable cause. The trio ended up on the ground and Stumpf put his hands around Wiscott's chest in an attempt to choke him, the affidavit said.

Police said they were forced to use their expandable batons and pepper spray to subdue Stumpf. After he was in custody, Stumpf continued to kick at the patrolmen, tried to kick out the windows of the cruiser and banged his head against the car windows, police said.
