Man pleads guilty to National City robbery

A Pittsburgh man has admitted to robbing eight banks -- including National City Bank in Hermitage -- in a guilty plea entered Monday at U.S. District Court, Pittsburgh.

Christopher Lyons, 22, pleaded guilty to five counts of bank robbery, and accepted responsibility for three other heists, said the U.S. Attorney's Office, Pittsburgh.

In the Hermitage case, Lyons walked into the bank at 7:10 p.m. May 25 and calmly handed a teller a manila envelope with a threatening note demanding cash, police said.

He got away with $1,854, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Lyons also pleaded guilty to robbing banks in Zelienople, Claysville, Butler and Pittsburgh, and accepted responsibility for robbing Ohio banks in St. Clairsville, Cambridge and Steubenville, said Assistant U.S. Attorney William C. Snyder.

All the robberies occurred in 2002.

Authorities referred to Lyons as the "Main Street robber" because four of the banks were in the main streets in different towns.

Lyons was arrested Aug. 1 on a charge of robbing a bank in Pittsburgh, and authorities said the manner of handing tellers manila envelopes with notes inside and telling them to load the envelopes with money was used in all of the robberies.

Lyons was indicted Dec. 10 in all the Pennsylvania robberies.

A weapon was not displayed in any of the robberies.

Lyons got away with a combined $21,869.

He remains in federal custody, held without bond. Judge Donetta W. Ambrose set sentencing for 10 a.m. June 27.

Lyons can be sentenced to up to 100 years in prison and a fine of up to $1.25 million.
