Couple sues paramedics,
trustees over medical care

A Brookfield couple has sued township trustees and four township paramedics, alleging mediocre medical care.

Brian D. and Patricia A. Hackett, of 5930 Merwin Chase Road, filed the suit Tuesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. Judge Andrew Logan has been assigned the case.

Three of the medics, John R. Bizub, James A. Williamson and Wayne J. Wozniak, are employees of the Brookfield Fire Department.

The fourth emergency medical technician, Stephen T. Elliott, is employed at the Columbus Division of Fire in Columbus, Ohio.

The suit claims that at about 4:30 a.m. June 11, Hackett became "unconscious and unresponsive" after falling from bed; an ambulance was dispatched after his wife called 911.

The suit alleges that the four men "did fail to follow established protocols and procedures," which resulted in "permanent scarring" and Hackett's "permanent disability."

Hackett's wife, who's also a plantiff, "suffered mental anguish" and "emotional distress" because of the incident, the suit alleges.

According to the suit, Hackett had to undergo surgery because of compartment syndrome.

Attorney Robert Shaker, who represents Hackett, could not be reached for comment.

Trustee J. Philip Schmidt and Police Chief Keith Barrett declined to comment on the allegations.
