Sewer rates are going up slightly for Greenville residents. At first, it seemed council might table the rate hike Monday night, because the text of the advertised ordinance could not be found. By the end of the meeting, Council President Pete Longiotti read a final draft of the ordinance, and copies of the law as it appeared in local newspapers were handed out. Longiotti said that after the Greenville Municipal Authority raised the price it charges for water, council had to re-evalute its billing practices as well. In Greenville, sewer rates are tied to water rates, which rose 15 percent in January. Instead of being charged for sewage based on 68 percent of their water bills, residents will now pay their 62 percent of their water bills. That equates to a slight increase on bi-monthly bills, Longiotti said. When determining the rate plan, Longiotti said, council used a residential bimonthly usage of 10,000 gallons as an average bill. Residents who are not water customers pay a flat rate for sewer service. The flat bimonthly rate will rise to $39.40 from $30.30. Commercial and industrial customers will pay $6.50 per employee, up from $5.04. |
