No criminal charges filed against suspended teacher

No criminal charges have been filed against a Hermitage man who was suspended without pay in March from his job as a music teacher with the Grove City Area School District and is in the process of being dismissed by the school board on the grounds of "immorality," among other things.

Grove City Police Chief Dean Osborne said he had not heard of any complaints being filed concerning Dan Konnen, who worked for the district for about a year at Hillview Intermediate Center and Grove City High School.

According to school Superintendent Dr. Robert Post, the district is following standard operating procedures for this situation. "What typically happens is someone makes an allegation. The district makes an investigation, then we meet with the employee to discuss the results of the investigation. Our initial response was to suspend him without pay in March," Post said.

He said he could not reveal the nature of any allegations because it is a personnel issue. Konnen was suspended the same month the allegations were made, Post said.

At Monday's board meeting, Director Doug Thomas described the problem as "incompetence, intemperance, persistent negligence and persistent and willful violation of the school laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania."

Once the suspension occurred, administrators continued to investigate Konnen and decided there was enoughevidence to begin dismissal procedures, Post said.

Konnen's case could go before the school board as a hearing. If he waives that hearing, the case could go before an arbiter; Post said the arbiter's decision could be appealed in court. The Herald was unable to reach Konnen for comment.
