The hearing for a Stoneboro man who allegedly stole over $25,000 from his father was continued until June 16 at District Justice Lawrence T. Silvis' court Wednesday.

William Joseph Farrell, of 75 Mine St., was charged March 19 with theft by unlawful taking and theft by deception, stemming from an August 22 incident.

According to the affidavit, the defendant's father Martin Farrell of 89 Farrell Road, Sandy Lake, sold standing timber to World Wide Hardwoods L.C. on June 3. Under the contract, Martin Farrell received $25,750 at the contract signing and was to receive another $25,750 when cutting began.

A company representative delivered the second check Aug. 22 to Martin Farrell's home. William accepted the check saying he had power of attorney for his father and signed a receipt for the check, police said.

Martin Farrell said his son did not have his power of attorney and was not authorized to accept the check on his behalf, police said. He also said he never received the money.

An original check, obtained from the timber company with William Farrell's name endorsing it, was deposited Aug. 22 at Mercer County Bank in Sandy Lake Township, police said.

According to the Mercer County District Attorney's office, the maximum sentence for a conviction on each charge is 7 years and the maximum fine for each charge is $15,000.
