Both drivers in Sept. crash
were legally drunk, cops say

Both drivers involved in a Sept. 20 crash in which a 2-year-old girl was critically injured were legally drunk, state police said.

The crash occurred when a pickup driven by Donald M. Nagle, 56, of 129 Seidle Road, Jefferson Township, ran into the back of a sport utilty vehicle driven by Scott B. Knouse, 25, of 607 Bessemer Ave., Grove City, on state Route 58 in Findley Township, police said.

Knouse had slowed to make a left turn, police said.

Knouse's daughter, Abigail, was in the back seat of her father's vehicle, police said.

The girl was admitted in critical condition to UPMC Children's Hospital, Pittsburgh. No information on her condition was available after Oct. 8, when the family requested that it no longer be released.

Knouse was injured but refused treatment, police said.

Knouse agreed at his recent preliminary hearing before District Justice Ruth M. French, Mercer, that the prosecution could show a crime had occurred and he might have been involved on a charge of aggravated assault by vehicle while driving drunk.

Knouse's blood-alcohol limit was 0.13, police said. A person with a blood-alcohol level of 0.10 is considered legally drunk.

Charges of endangering welfare of children, reckless endangerment and drunken driving were withdrawn.

Knouse was released after posting $10,000 bond.

Nagle faces a preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. Friday before French on charges of reckless endangerment, aggravated assault by vehicle while driving drunk, drunken driving, driving at an unsafe speed, careless driving and reckless driving.

His blood-alcohol level was 0.22, police said.

Nagle also is free after having posted $10,000 bond.
