Herald erred on charges, other facts, in crash story

§   §   §

The Herald flip-flopped charges and made other errors in a story Tuesday about a Sept. 20 traffic accident in Findley Township.

Charges of endangering the welfare of children, reckless endangerment and drunken driving filed against Scott B. Knouse were held for court, according to the office of District Justice Ruth M. French, Mercer. A charge of aggravated assault by vehicle while driving drunk was withdrawn.

The Herald, which based its information on a hand-written note attached to Knouse's file at French's office, incorrectly said the aggravated assault charge was held for court, while the other charges were withdrawn.

Knouse's attorney, Jack W. Cline, said an agreement was reached with the Mercer County District Attorney's Office to arraign Knouse in Common Pleas Court only on charges of drunken driving.

The Herald incorrectly listed Knouse's age -- it's 35 -- and the conditions of his release. He did not have to post $10,000 bond, but was released on nonmonetary bond, which is similar to being released on his own recognizance, French's office said.

Using information from the police report, The Herald also misspelled Knouse's daughter's name. It is spelled Abbigail, according to Cline.
