2 motorists, child injured
in head-on crash on Rt. 58

Three people were sent to area hospitals Monday after a head-on collision on state Route 58 in Delaware Township.

Robert Gurtner, 35, 10th Street, Reynolds, was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh with severe head injuries and was in critical condition Tuesday afternoon, a hospital spokesman said. His passenger, 9-year-old Joshua Biddlecom, same address, was treated at UPMC Horizon, Greenville, a hospital spokesman said. Neither Gurtner nor Joshua was wearing a seatbelt.

The other driver, Shawn Magee, 28, of 199 S. Mercer St., Greenville, was also treated at the Greenville hospital, a nursing superviser said. He was wearing a seatbelt and the airbag deployed in his car, police said.

Police said the accident occurred when the Gurtner vehicle turned left at Hamburg Road and collided with the Magee car.

After impact, the Gurtner vehicle spun and came to rest in a grassy yard; the Magee vehicle hit a stop sign and several large boulders owned by the Mercer County Historical Society, police said.

Fredonia volunteer firefighters, PennDOT crews, Greenville-West Salem Township police and the Mercer County Sheriff's Department assisted.
