Seminarian to be ordained

Seminarian Kevin E. Marks of Hubbard will be ordained a deacon in the Byzantine Catholic Church during Hierarchial Divine Liturgy at 10:30 a.m. Sunday in St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, 2230 Highland Road.

Metropolitan Archbishop Basil M. Schott of Pittsburgh, who succeeded the late Archbishop Judson M. Procyk, will conduct the ordination. Archeparchial Choir of Pittsburgh will sing the responses.

The diaconate is the third step toward ordination to the priesthood. Marks, a son of William and Greta Marks, would be the first vocation from the Hermitage church, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2005.

Following his 1996 Hubbard High School graduation, Marks entered Sts. Cyril and Methodius Seminary in Pittsburgh. He graduated in May 2000 from La Roche College in Pittsburgh with a bachelor's degree in religious studies. He is in his third year of theology.

Marks serves as night chaplain at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, and teaches religious education to high school students at St. Gregory Byzantine Catholic Church, Upper St. Clair.

He served as subdeacon during the Easter weekend at St. Michael's Byzantine.

A reception will follow in the church social center.

The Rev. Frank Firko, pastor of the Hermitage church, said there will be no 7:30 a.m. Divine Liturgy on Sunday.
