Satanic symbols and profanity were sprayed in blue paint on a church in Springfield Township over the weekend, state police said. Neighbors said a nearby church was targeted as well.

Drake Alliance Church at 1573 Brent Road had a pentagram, an anarchist symbol, an evil eye, the word "sin" and an expletive painted on it between 4 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday. Another pentagram was spray-painted in front of the back steps.

Neighbors said Monday morning that nearby Morning Star Ministries, 38 Old Mercer Road, had also been spray-painted but church members had cleaned it off already.

"That is destruction and for them to do it to a church is really bad," said a woman who lives on No. 2 Mine Road, near the churches. She declined to give her name for fear of retribution from the vandals.

Another neighbor, who also declined to give his name, said he and his family did not hear anything the night the vandalism occurred.

Messages left with the churches were unreturned.

Police have asked anyone with information to call them at (724) 662-6162.

Vandals could be charged with criminal mischief and institutional vandalism, police said.

State police in New Castle said a couple of places had been spray-painted over the weekend in the New Castle area, but they weren't churches and the graffiti was not satanic in nature.
