Animal shelter conducting random checks

The Shenango Valley Animal Shelter is conducting random checks for 2003 dog licenses and rabies shots for cats and dogs.

Kathy Whitman, chief dog warden, said she wants to remind people that pet owners are responsible if their dog or cat bites someone. Ms. Whitman said she wants to return as many pets as possible to their owners, and the way for owners to get their pets back is to demonstrate that they're responsible pet owners.

An owner has a better chance of getting his or her pet back if it has a license, because a resident or police can identify the owner before the animal has to be taken to the shelter, Ms. Whitman said.

People should not pet, tease or throw anything at stray animals, Ms. Whitman said. She said parents should remind their children to stay away from strays because the pets could be frightened and act aggressively.

Animal shelter agents will check pets in West Middlesex, Farrell, Sharon, Wheatland, Sharpsville and Shenango Township, Ms. Whitman said. She said state wardens will check the outlying areas of Mercer County.

Ms. Whitman said pet owners should remember that a license and rabies shot are cheaper than the fine if pets don't have them. Fines range from $25 to $300, Ms. Whitman said.

Licenses can be purchased at the animal shelter, 2599 Broadway Ave., Hermitage; the Mercer County Courthouse or Sereday's True Value in West Middlesex.
