Fairhaven School renewal levy
is only issue on Tuesday's ballot

Brookfield voters will have only one issue to decide in the 2003 primary election -- whether to vote yes or no on Issue 1.

The 1.5-mill tax levy, first passed in 1998, is the sole Trumbull County-wide issue on Tuesday's ballot. Property taxes won't be increased, since this is a renewal levy.

The levy would be used to continue funding the county's Fairhaven School program, also known as Trumbull County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.

The school has three workshops for more than 400 students. It also provides speech, occupational and physical therapy and residential support, health and transit services.

Money generated from the levy would be used to maintain and run the school's programs, including the acquisition, fabrication, support and utilization of facilities for mentally retarded and developmentally disabled people, said Dr. Douglas A. Burkhardt, Fairhaven's superintendent.

Burkhardt added that funds from the levy would also go toward maintaining and operating services and personnel requirements for the school's 350 employees, upkeep of buildings and utilities.

If the levy is renewed, it will stay in effect for 10 years, according to the Trumbull County Board of Elections.

Burkhardt said the levy generates about $4.5 million each year, which is "important because it provides about 25 percent of the facility's total operating budget."
