Info on school candidates
being collected on Web site

The League of Women Voters of Greater Pittsburgh is collecting information from school board candidates in the May 20 primary election.

The league's effort is in collaboration with the Education Policy and Issues Center and the Allegheny Conference on Community Development.

The information is being used in a nonpartisan voters' guide that is available on the Web site of the League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania, www.pa.lwv.org

Questions ask candidates why they're running, as well as their thoughts on school safety, proficiency for children and funding.

As of Monday, only 21 of 90 candidates for school boards in Mercer County had replied. Interested candidates can contact Peggy Ruggles at (724) 347-4968 or at grug@infonline.net for more information.

The guide includes all candidates whose names appear on the official ballot. Write-in candidates are not included. If information isn't submitted, candidates' names will appear in the guide with a "No Reply" next to it.

Ms. Ruggles is also serving as a voters' guide editor for the League of Women Voters of Mercer County, which is compiling information for countywide and statewide races for The Herald's Voters' Guide, which will be published Sunday.
