Legion ladies' auxiliary

§   §   §

to vote to dissolve unit

The Ladies' Auxiliary of the Greenville American Legion Post 140 has about 80 members on its roll.

But, in recent history, just four women have been shouldering the burden of keeping the club alive.

So, when the club next meets at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the post home, they will be voting to dissolve the club.

Mrs. Phillis Eastlick is the unit's treasurer.

"We're voting on dissolving the unit because of lack of interest," she said. "Right now, we don't even have a quorum to make decisions. We shouldn't even be meeting to make decisions. It's not legal."

If the auxiliary is dissolved, she said, "It's the veterans who will suffer."

Besides selling poppies, the club raised money by selling soups and stews, bingo games and an annual dinner.

That money was donated to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts organizations, the Salvation Army, the Good Shepherd Center and to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Butler to help pay for outing days.

"Although last year, we couldn't have the dinner for the veterans because there just weren't enough people to help serve," she said.

Besides Mrs. Eastlick, president Pat Miller, treasurer Ethel Dale, and one other woman are the only regular attendees.

"We might get one or two now and again," Mrs. Eastlick said, "but we never have enough."

People have expressed support in keeping the Ladies' Auxiliary going, Mrs. Eastlick said, but no one ever comes to help.

"People say to keep it going," she said, "but when you call to ask them to bake cookies or something, they're always too busy. That's the problem."

If the unit is dissolved Tuesday, women can move their memberships to different posts, but some, Mrs. Eastlick said, will probably drop out all together.

"It's just too much for a small number of people to do," she said. "It's really down to the bottom of the barrel."

Reservations must be phoned in to Pat Miller at (724) 588-3984; Ethel Dale at (724) 588-9821 or to Phillis Eastlick at (724) 646-1936 by Friday.
