Youngstown man faces
federal charges in gun case

A Youngstown man already facing charges for allegedly having a stolen gun now has a federal case to deal with stemming from that gun.

A grand jury in Pittsburgh Tuesday indicted Arian O'Connor, 25, on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Pittsburgh.

Spokesman Paul Brysh said the case has not been assigned to a judge and no arraignment has been set.

O'Connor was arrested Sept. 27 by Hermitage police after a short chase.

He was wanted by Youngstown police on a charge of felonious assault and Ohio parole authorities for violating parole on a separate felonious assault case, Hermitage police said.

Mahoning County Violent Crimes Task Force contacted Hermitage police and said O'Connor might visit a state Route 18 motel, police said.

Police from Hermitage and Mahoning County staked out the motel and O'Connor showed up, but fled in a car southbound on South Hermitage Road before he could be arrested, police said.

While being pursued, O'Connor threw a loaded Ruger 9 mm pistol, which had been stolen from Youngstown, out the window, police said.

O'Connor stopped at the Broadway Avenue/Route 18 ramp to Route 60 and was arrested without incident, police said.

Hermitage police charged O'Connor with receiving stolen property and two firearms violations.

O'Connor had pleaded guilty to carrying a firearm without a license, and was sentenced to 19 to 60 months in state prison and fined costs, but appealed to Superior Court, according to Mercer County Common Pleas Court documents.

The appeal was dropped, but O'Connor withdrew his plea and could go to trial this month, according to court documents.

O'Connor was told that withdrawing his plea could trigger the federal charges, according to court documents.

Because of his conviction on the charge of felonious assault, O'Connor is not allowed to possess a firearm, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

If convicted on the federal charge, O'Connor could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

O'Connor is being held in Mercer County Jail. Brysh said he wasn't sure if federal authorities would begin their own detention proceedings.
