A truck that collects used cooking oil from restaurants overturned on state Route 18 in Sugar Grove Township at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday, spilling the oil across the road and into ditches, Hempfield Township police said. The road was closed for more than five hours as crews from the state Department of Environmental Protection were called to clean up the mess. Freda Tarbell of DEP's Erie office said PennDOT spread sand across the road to help make it safe. Weavertown Environmental cleaned up the rest of the spill, she said. The accident happened about a mile north of Osgood Road, near the Crawford County line, when a tire blew out and driver Ronald K. Mann, 34, of Colliers, W.Va., lost control of the truck. The truck hit the berm and overturned, police said. Fewer than 100 gallons of the oil spilled, Ms. Tarbell said. Mann was treated at UPMC Horizon, Greenville, police said. |
