Mercer County CareerLink has scheduled educational sessions for Werner Co. employees who will be losing their jobs. Workers have the choice of going from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 21 or from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 22 at Hempfield Township Volunteer Fire Department's Station One Banquet Center, 26 Sixth Ave. Fourteen job-training organizations will give information about various courses available. Those losing their jobs at Werner are eligible for the Trade Adjustment Assistance program. While workers can get extended unemployment benefits, the state said it lacks the money for immediate job training for displaced workers. However, the state Department of Labor and Industry said it would grant a waiver to those workers so that once funding is available, their eligible education expenses would be covered. In March, Werner said it was closing its ladder line in Sugar Grove Township because it wasn't financially competitive with its other plants. Werner said the line would be moved to one of its other plants in the United States. The company said nearly 500 local workers would lose their jobs by the end of summer. |
