Westminster
College
graduation
is Saturday

More than 325 students are expected to graduate Saturday from Westminster College, New Wilmington.

A baccalaureate service begins at 10:30 a.m. and commencement is set for 2:30 p.m.

Speaking at baccalaureate is the Rev. Steven Allen, college chaplain. His topic is the "Journey Into and Out of Pain."

Commencement will feature three speakers who will get honorary doctorates from the college.

J. Fred Rentz, retired president of The (New Castle) News Co. and member of the Westminster trustees for 27 years will speak on "Waving the Flags." Rentz, a trustee emeritus, was a bomber pilot in World Ward II, completing 30 missions including one on D-Day. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and four Air Medals.

William E. Strickland, Jr., president and chief executive officer of the Manchester Bidwell Corp. and the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, will speak on "Community Responsibilities."

Strickland chaired the expansion arts panel of the National Endowment for the Arts and served a six-year presidential appointment as one of its council members; and served as a consultant with the British/American Arts Association in London.

College trustee emeritus S. Donald Wiley, retired senior vice president and general counsel of H.J. Heinz Co., will ask the graduates, "What now?"

After his graduation from Westminster, Wiley's "What now?" took him to the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and then to the Assistant District Attorney's Office of Allegheny County. After a successful 12 years, Wiley moved into a small legal department at Heinz.

Also speaking will be Dr. Walter E. Scheid, professor emeritus of speech at Westminster, who spoke to the class when it entered Westminster in 1999.
