New hires fill depleted police, fire ranks

Greenville council Tuesday hired firefighters and policemen to make up for short staffing.

Council hired two part-time, temporary firefighters, a part-time patrolman and upgraded a part-time patrolman to full time.

In the fire department, Lt. Ed Cooper is on extended vacation, and firefighter Rob Ensminger is out for three months. Ensminger broke his ankle after a fall from a ladder at his home

That, said Fire Chief Steve Thompson, left the department dangerously shorthanded.

"We're down to four full-time staff," he said. "We're two weeks behind on our safety inspections, and fair-weather tests and maintenance are starting soon. We're really shorthanded."

The new firefighters, Andrew Gramata and Mike Moomey, will be paid $7.34 an hour for up to 32 hours a week. Gramata is a volunteer with the fire department, and Moomey is a paramedic in Grove City.

The temporary firefighters will work up to 90 days or until Ensminger comes back from sick leave, said council President Pete Longiotti.

In the police department, council moved Dennis Bish from part time to full time to replace Will Webster, who retired. A part-timer, Mark Deluca, was hired to replace Bish.
