A walkway collapsed during a heavy rain Friday at Sharon Speedway, injuring spectators who were trying to get under cover, said track co-owner Lisa Blaney. Mrs. Blaney, wife of NASCAR driver Dave Blaney, said a 10- to 15-foot section of the walkway at the base of the old wooden grandstands at the track gave way at about 9:15 p.m. under the weight of fans who were trying to get out of the weather. She said the walk is about 4 feet above the ground and none of those who fell seemed to be seriously hurt. Of the 10 people taken to area hospitals for minor injuries, one may have suffered a broken ankle, Mrs. Blaney said. |
