State liquor 'outlet stores' open for business

Three of Pennsylvania's first wine and spirits outlet stores, including one in Hermitage, opened Monday, a Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board news release said.

PLCB officials said the stores will target "border bleed," the exodus of Pennsylvanians who cross the state line in search of lower prices or better selections.

"We have packaged our power as the largest purchaser of wine and liquor in the country ... to obtain dramatic discounts on brand-name wine and spirits year-round, and we have passed these savings on to customers," said PLCB Chairman Jonathan Newman.

Newman said the new border outlets are "the latest step in the PLCB's effort -- and eagerness -- to listen to our consumers."

In addition to the 2321 E. State St. location, outlet stores have opened near Philadelphia and in Gettysburg. A fourth store, which is under construction in Easton, is scheduled to open June 14.
