Barn fire sparked by kids playing with lighter

A couple of kids playing with a lighter were the cause of a fire that destroyed a barn Monday afternoon at 1063 Hilltop Road, according to West Salem Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Tom Hunt.

The barn is owned by Fay Beckstine of 1039 Hilltop Road, Hunt said. The kids were family members, Hunt added, but he would not identify them.

According to Hunt, two boats and wood were lost in the 30-by-100-foot wood frame structure that had metal siding. Hunt said the barn was a "total loss," but he had no estimated value. There were no injuries, he said.

West Salem firefighters were called to scene at 5:45 p.m. and cleared at 8:12 p.m., Hunt said. Mutual aid assistance, he added, was provided by Greenville Fire Department and Jamestown, Hempfield Township, Transfer and South Pymatuning Township volunteer departments.
