Tom O'Malley and Noelle Marie had plans. Through love letters and cards they exchanged over more than two years, the two planned a life together, often talking about their feelings for one another.

Certain facts of life stood in the lovers' way, however.

According to court documents filed in Summit County, Ohio:

Tom is Sgt. Sean Matheny, a veteran of the Akron police department, who is nearing retirement.

Noelle Marie is Linda Karlen, formerly of Sharon and Hempfield Township, who is serving the 13th year of a 15-year prison sentence for her role in the 1988 abduction and slaying of Thiel College graduate Roger "Butch" Pratt of Munhall, Pa.

Police documents did not identify Ms. Karlen by name. Because she was working as a police informant, every passage that mentioned her by name was blacked out. Documents from the Summit County Court of Common Pleas identified the woman Matheny was working with as Ms. Karlen.
