The incoming leader of Mercer Area School District says he plans to continue the district's strong legacy as superintendent. He would know, since he's been there 24 years.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. William D. "Bill" Gathers was appointed as the new superintendent at the May 19 school board meeting.

"Prior to the meeting, in a personnel session, they asked if I'd like to take on the duties of superintendent," he said. "I said 'yes.' ''
