State office hears complaints about W. Pa. consortium

By Kristen Garrett

The state Auditor General's Office is aware of complaints about the Western Pennsylvania Health Care Consortium and could investigate the financially troubled health insurance group.

The office has received several complaints about the consortium's financial woes, according to Sandy Williams, assistant director of communications for the auditor general.

"At this point the issue is to determine if we (the auditor general's office) have the authority to look into it in more detail," Ms. Williams said. She said the office can conduct an investigation only if state funds are involved.

If preliminary information shows the situation with the consortium is a matter for the auditor general's office, then a more formal investigation could take place, she said.
