Man dies after cycle hits deer

A Greenville-area man enroute to his job as a prison guard was killed when his motorcycle hit a deer Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Gary Skiff Jr., 30, was pronounced dead at 2:55 p.m. in the emergency room of Hamot Medical Center, said Lyell Cook, Erie County coroner. Cook said Skiff was headed to his job at the state prison at Albion when the crash occurred at 1:26 p.m.

State police at Meadville said Skiff's motorcycle was northbound on state Route 18 when a deer ran into its path in Spring Township, north of Conneautville, near the Erie County line. The cycle hit the deer and Skiff was thrown; he was wearing a helmet but suffered major head injuries, police said.

Obituary information was unavailable.
