Council considers rental inspections, property upkeep

By Larissa Theodore

Wheatland council plans to vote next month on two ordinances, one that would raise the price of rental-inspection fees and another that would increase property-maintenance fines.

If the inspection law passes, for each single rental unit, owners would have to pay $50, plus $20 for each additional unit on that property. A duplex, for example, would cost $70.

Inspections would be required as tenants change and the fee for that would be $15.

Councilwoman Lorraine Jones said council hopes the ordinance will keep all properties in the borough at inhabitable levels.
