Wheatland Tube Co. and its striking union workers have scheduled a meeting Monday with a federal mediator in an attempt to reach a labor agreement. United Steelworkers Local 1660 struck the Wheatland pipe and tube plant on April 28 when its contract expired. Workers said the company is seeking concessions such as co-payments on health-care insurance premiums and changes in pension and retiree benefits. Local 1660 represents 470 production and maintenance workers. Wheatland Tube has said it needs the changes to remain competitive in a global economy. The last bargaining session was June 4, and progress was reported. |
