Learning council offers programs and classes

Sharon Lifelong Learning Council will host the following summer programs:

   » Sharon playground carnivals -- 1 to 3 p.m. June 25 on Jefferson Avenue Playground.

   » Closing summer carnival -- 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 6 on Jefferson Avenue Playground.

The following classes are scheduled:

   » Jazz dance -- July 21 through 25 and 28 through 31; and Aug. 1 in the cafeteria of West Hill Elementary School, Sharon, for first- through third-graders. Cost is $10 for non-residents.

   » Children's literature -- 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 4, 6, 11, 13 and 15 in Musser Elementary School, Sharon, for first- through third-graders. Cost is $10 for non-residents.

   » Creative writing -- 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 25 through 27 and 30; and July 1 in West Hill Elementary, for third- and fourth-graders. Cost is $10 for non-residents.

   » E-Z Snacks -- 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 30; and July 1 through 3 in West Hill Elementary, for first- through sixth-graders. Cost is $10 for non-residents.

   » "Take Care of Our Earth" -- 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. July 11, 18 and 25; and Aug. 1 and 8, for third- and fourth-graders. Cost is $10 for non-residents.

   » Math, geometry and fractions -- Noon to 2 p.m. July 11, 18 and 25; and Aug. 1 and 8, for third- and fourth-graders. Cost is $10 for non-residents.

   » Tie-dye T-shirt -- 9:30 a.m. to noon June 30 through July 3 at Jefferson Avenue Playground. Cost is $10 for non-residents.

   » Jazz dance -- 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. June 23 through 27 and 30; and July 1 through 3 in West Hill Elementary's gymnasium. Cost is $10 for non-residents.

   » Alpha Art -- 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. June 23 through 27 in Case Avenue Elementary library, for fourth- through sixth-graders. Cost is $10 for non-residents.

   » Kidz Biz World -- 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 4 through 8 in Case Avenue Elementary library, for sixth- through eighth-graders.

   » Mini twirling camp -- 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. July 14 through 18, for kindergarten through sixth-graders. Cost is $20 for non-residents.

   » Cheerleading camp -- 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. July 14 through 18, for second- through eighth-graders. Cost is $20 for non-residents.

   » Financial workshop for individual investors -- 6 to 8 p.m. July 9, 16, 23, 30; and Aug. 6 and 13 in Musser Elementary, for adults. Cost is $14 for books which can be purchased during class. Call (724) 347-5001 to register by June 25.

   » Microsoft Excel I -- 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 7 through 10 in Musser Elementary's computer lab, for adults. Cost is $25 for Sharon residents; $35 for non-residents.

   » Microsoft Word II -- 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 7 through 10 in Musser Elementary's computer lab, for adults. Cost is $25 for Sharon residents; $35 for non-residents.

   » Introduction to the Internet -- 6 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 4 and 5 in Musser Elementary's computer lab, for adults. Cost is $10 for Sharon residents; $15 for non-residents.

   » Microsoft PowerPoint -- 6 to 8:30 p.m. July 14 through 17 in Musser Elementary, for adults. Cost is $25 for Sharon residents; $35 for non-residents.

The Read and Discuss adult book club will meet at 7:30 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month in the Bennet ESC Building at 215 Forker Blvd., Sharon. The following books will be discussed:

   » June 24 -- Michael Cunningham's "The Hours."

   » July 8 -- Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray."

   » July 22 -- William Dean Howells' "The Rise of Silas Lapham."

   » Aug. 12 -- Jack Finney's "Time and Again."

   » Aug. 22 -- Barbara Kingsolver's "The Poisonwood Bible."

Moonjar Money will teach third- through fifth-graders how to save through an ancient form of using money. The program will be held in the following locations from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.;

   » June 23, 25, 27 and 30; and July 2 in West Hill Elementary.

   » June 21, 23, 25, 28 and 30 in Case Avenue Elementary School, Sharon.

   » Aug. 4, 6, 11, 13 and 15 in Musser Elementary.

A computer resource center is available in Mercer County Housing Authority's Community Center in Farrell. Call (724) 981-7236.

SCORE, counselors to America's small business, will present a seminar at 9:30 a.m. to noon Aug. 2 in Sharon City Building on Connelly Boulevard. Registration is needed.

A local history teacher also is interested in facilitating a current events group. Call the council for information.
