Concept of helping planted in kids

By Larissa Theodore

Herald Staff Writer

Planting flowers isn't an activity Aariana Jones often gets to do, but when she and other kids from Quinby Street Resource Center in Sharon got together to plant some, the 10-year-old Farrell girl had a ball.

"It was fun," she said. "We planted some pink flowers and my favorite color is pink. I liked the colors."

Through Seeds of Hope, a Weed and Seed initiative, 50 kids from Shenango Valley Urban League's Urban Village, Southwest Gardens and E.R.A.S.E. Youth Coalition joined the Quinby Street center, planting 20 whiskey barrels of flowers scattered in spots around the cities of Farrell and Sharon. Each barrel was assigned to a block captain to help maintain them.

Gertrude Bagnall, master gardener at Penn State Cooperative Extension, worked with the different groups, helping the kids with planting.
