Town, township talks
to begin

In mid-July, residents of Hempfield Township and Greenville will have a chance to weigh in on future cooperation or consolidation between the their governments to provide services offered in the two municipalities.

In accordance with its Act 47 plan, Greenville is required to start negotiating with surrounding communities about combining government services. The product of those talks will be a joint comprehensive plan.

"We're going to be examining a number of issues," said Borough Manager Vance Oakes, who is a member of a committee appointed to look at what could possibly be combined.

The services that could be combined include police and fire protection, water and sewers. Other areas that could be included are housing problems and business development.

The plan calls for public input. The first public meeting will be 7 p.m. July 15 in Greenville High School's lecture hall.
