effects of ruling Herald Staff Writer In the past, Margaret Orchard, librarian at Stey-Nevant Public Library in Farrell, has seen a few kids ogling sexually explicit photos on the Internet. When it happens, she said she quickly lets them know that she won't tolerate it. "We've had kids in porn sites before and I'll go over and say, 'If you're in a site like that, you need your mother here sitting next to you.' " The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 Monday that libraries such as Stey-Nevant may soon have to filter all Internet-ready computers or face cuts in federal funding. The four public access computers at Stey-Nevant don't have filters, but Ms. Orchard said there is an agreement of use that patrons must adhere to. "We view (the Internet) as an extension of the library," she said. "You really shouldn't be looking up porn sites on a library computer." |
