Educating cancer patients about the need for dental exams is what Dr. Susan E. Calderbank calls "a labor of love." Dr. Calderbank, a Greenville dentist, is an advocate for the importance of dental care for anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer. Her mission began in 1987 while her mother was undergoing cancer treatment and had "horrendous" problems with her mouth. Dr. Calderbank said her mother had bleeding in her mouth and a fungal infection. When Dr. Calderbank told the oncologist she suspected her mother had a fungal infection she said his reply was, "She has cancer. What do you expect?" After her mother passed away, Dr. Calderbank said she began a mission to spread the word about the need for dental care for cancer patients. |
