City, PennDOT want to ease

congestion on Broadway

Dan Gracenin wasn't too worried that only one person showed up for a public meeting on a traffic study of Broadway Avenue in Hermitage.

Although planners are interested in what anyone has to say, the people who probably have the most to gain or lose by any changes in the roadway -- representatives of the businesses that are along the road -- have already given their input at other meetings, said the assistant director of Mercer County Regional Planning Commission.

Timothy C. Jablon, president of Wheatland Steel Processing and vice president of Phillips Steel Co., said he likes some of the ideas planners have come up with, but wants to see final plans. He said he and others in his companies will study them and be ready with questions.

The city, the planning commission and PennDOT are looking at ways to ease congestion and increase safety on two-lane Broadway, particularly for traffic heading west from Interstate 80 and routes 60 and 18.

Motor vehicles often come off I-80 and Route 60 at speeds faster than the 45-mph limit, while tractor-trailers slow traffic.
