Ohio sales tax takes effect COLUMBUS -- Ohio shoppers will have to shell out a little more money for some purchases now that the statewide sales tax rate has increased by 1 percent. Tuesday, the state sales tax increased to 6 percent. The last sales tax increase occurred in 1981, which made permanent a temporary 5 percent rate. According to the state Department of Taxation, the new increase is part of state lawmakers' efforts to combat state budget shortages; the increase is expected to bring in more than $2.5 billion over the next two years. |
