Island sounds will add spice

While people pedal, paddle and hoof it in Grove City today during the sixth annual relay, a steel drum band from Greenville will help keep their toes tapping in the evening.

Called the Caribbean Music Connection, the band, which is made up of Greenville High School students, specializes in island, jazz, classic rock, classical and fusion styles of music.

"We played at Strawberry Days in Grove City last year and it's a very receptive crowd up there. They are very appreciative of the efforts of these young people," said Rick Powers, who owns several physical therapy businesses in the area.

Powers came up with the idea for the band several years ago when he realized that his son was interested in pursuing something in the music field as he got older. Greenville High also has a steel drum band as part of its band program, so many of the students had a handle on the style and some experience with steel drums.
