Council putting brakes on truck engine noise

By Larissa Theodore

Truckers driving along Broadway Avenue through Wheatland may soon face restrictions in the use of their engine brakes.

Wheatland council voted Wednesday to advertise an ordinance that restricts the use of engine braking systems along Broadway Avenue.

Commonly called Jake brakes the systems turn tractor-trailer engines into air compressors, giving them more power mainly on downhill stretches.

While engine brakes save wear on normal breaks, they apparently cause a heck of a lot of noise on Broadway.
