Afternoon storm knocks out lights, phones; topples trees

A thunderstorm Friday flooded parts of Greenville, washed out roads in Jefferson Township, unleashed winds strong enough to knock over trees and knocked out electric and telephone service throughout Mercer County.

No injuries were reported and estimates of property damage were unavailable, said Mercer County 911.

The bulk of 911 calls came in between 2 and 4:30 p.m., and the hardest areas were Greenville and Hempfield Township.

Hempfield police patrolman David Gregory said emergency officials and road crews were clearing trees and securing the areas around downed wires until Pennsylvania Power Co. crews could arrive.

"Pretty much a nuisance, but nothing serious," Gregory said.

National Weather Service in Pittsburgh said 1.48 inches of rain fell, 1.08 inches of it within 45 minutes, and wind speeds likely topped 60 mph.
